Week Two | Stornoway

Well we are back again with our second installment of our Summer Sundae countdown. Last week we took a look into the world of the awesome Los Campesinos and in at week two of our countdown we’ve gone for Stornoway. Since Fleet Foxes burst onto the scene back in 2008 there seems to have been an influx of folk bands. As a bit of a closet folk music fan myself, I’m a bit disappointed to say that not all have cut the mustard, one who have however, are Stornoway.

The Oxford four piece released their debut album, Beachcomber’s Windowsill, in May of this year to rave critical reviews. It may seem odd that a band from Oxford would name themselves after a town in the Outer Hebrides but all will become clear as soon as you hear the first notes of album opener Zorbing. With Celtic style vocals combined with simple but ultimately gorgeous melodies I defy anyone, even with the coldest of hearts, not to fill with the warmth of Summer.

I wouldn’t go to see Stornoway expecting much of a mosh pit and they are never likely to get you up and dancing. What I would suggest to you though is to don your favourite straw hat, and, with a pint of dodgy cider in hand celebrate just how good low-tech music really can be.

Stornoway play the Main Stage of Summer Sundae on Saturday 14thAugust.

Next week the Monograph will be picking our 3rd not to be missed act…so don’t…erm…miss it!
