To quote Socrates, “The more I learn, the more I learn how little I know”, and nothing can be more true than my investigation of music in Leicester. To be fair, I have always followed the local scene the best I can, but being involved in this magazine I have become something of an obsessive. To the outsider Leicester is just like every other city for music, full of bands with names beginning “the” and fringes to make the Edinburgh Festival jealous, but this could not be further from the truth. If you’re a fan of the ol’ electronica I suggest you check out Phonetic Error, a one man digital shit storm and the former bassist of Maybeshewill who will certainly leave fans hungry for more.
Akin to current Monograph featurette Rival Consoles, Phonetic Error lulls and excites simultaneously, bringing to life beautiful bleeps. His new track Affinity has just been uploaded to his Myspace page and I can safely say I am a fan (a big electric fan if you will haha). The track builds a soundscape that rolls, jumps and darts and I imagine will soon be a favourite of the Clubbers on a Sunday morning, self loathing come down. Not that is in anyway morbid or like Coldplay on ketamine, but just that he seems to fuse perfectly the face/slow pace that so many other DJs/producers seem to fail at. I am not alone in my love of his tunes, the BBC are also ones to give praise, both radio and the very reliable BBC Leicester Introducing webpage.
Having checked out his back catalogue on his Myspace, its clear to me now that I want more. His album is temporarily off download for reasons unknown, but we will keep you updated when it’s back. From what we have heard though, phonetic error is one to watch (or audio equivalent).
