Her Name is Calla | Long Grass

For some reason, when someone suggested I listened to Her Name is Calla, I wasn’t holding out much hope. This isn’t to say I lack the trust in suggestions from that particular person but somehow my brain said “No”. Since listening to their new track Long Grass I will hold my hands up and say that the ‘Jumping to a conclusion on something based on absolutely nothing at all’ monster claimed another victim, in other (more shorter) words… I was very very wrong.

Long Grass is a hauntingly melodic six minutes and eighteen seconds that stays with you long after the track has finished. The delicate vocals sweep into the room and circulate like a dancing pixie. The whole track has a feeling of something I can’t quite put my finder on, the closest I have managed to come is Medieval Angst. The band are comprised of Banjos, Violins, French Horn, Cellos and so on and so forth, but without the “look at us we use all this crazy stuff” tag that attaches itself to groups of this nature, the instruments on this track slot together and interweave, creating a net that makes it hard for you to leave.

As a packaging designer for a brief time in a previous life, I am also quietly in love with the limited edition packaging of Long Grass. Housed in a wooden casing (seen above) it looks just as good as the track. It’s also nice to see bands who don’t have the massive budgets like major record label backed ones do this. As much as I like the onset of digital on demand music I really don’t think we should let the tactile element to music die.

They are going to be playing this years White Noise Festival which we will be covering, and after hearing them I am really excited about their set. This is not the last you will hear of these guys, I am living proof of that whatever your expectations are of this band upon entry, they will seduce you. 5/5.
