The clever people at Cuttlefish have created a free, neutral service giving Leicester venues, promoters and individuals a centralised platform to list and share their events.
Sean Clark, Director of Cuttlefish Multimedia, explains how and why Leicester needs a single, community shared events listing “The idea was to create an events guide that could automatically collect as much local ‘What’s On’ information as possible, store it in a central web database, and then ‘feed’ it to all of the websites and magazines in Leicester who wanted listings. This would allow venues, promoters and artists to publish an event once and see it displayed in many places”.
It took a while to get the ball rolling, but with the support of people such as Ben Ravilious, Sarah Harrison at the City Centre Management team, FD2D magazine and of course Cuttlefish we now have something which I think is going to be a real asset for the city. At the moment much of the events information is entered by hand, but we hope that as more venues are able to provide us with feeds then it will increasingly become something that is automatically updated with the latest information direct from source. The Leicester Events Guide site has been kept intentionally simple as most people will access the information in the places they currently visit online, such as the Monograph website, iPhone and mobile apps, in print or event directly through their own calendars.
The service will be free for event providers and users and in order to pay for the service they provide an official Leicester Events Guide iPhone and Android app that can be sponsored by local festivals and venues. The people bringing us The Leicester Events Guide site have some really interesting ideas for how to make this app quite unique. For more details visit www.leicestereventsguide.com
